Collin Johanson

In It

Collin Johanson received his MFA from Concordia University in 2013 and currently works and teaches in Edmonton, AB. Johanson won the Joseph Plaskett Foundation Award in 2014, and was an RBC Painting Competition finalist in 2008. His work been exhibited in numerous venues including the National Gallery of Canada, the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art, the Contemporary Art Gallery, Regart (Quebec), Access Gallery, and the Surrey Art Gallery.

Monte Clark is pleased to introduce seven new paintings by Collin Johanson titled “In It”

The title suggests precarity, busyness, and the struggle to maintain a balance between multiple spheres (professional, practical, and personal). To suggest we are ‘in it’ also suggests that we can easily be out of it, or fall off balance.  In these works, isolated figures are immersed in turbulent abstract gestures and their bodies are fragmented and displaced, located in spaces that are difficult to define.

Johanson’s works often exist in a state between figuration and abstraction where forms never fully become fixed. Instability keeps these images in flux, resisting easy interpretation. The methods used by Johanson are not towards a direct end, but involve a back and forth between the artist and the materials. This allows for memory, association, and experience to present themselves in an unpremeditated fashion.
